Skills into Opportunity: Tatev’s Story of Employment and Resilience

Tatev ’s life was forever changed when the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh forced her family to flee their home in September 2023. Along with her husband, two children, and two extended family members, Tatev arrived in Hrazdan, Armenia, with little more than the uncertainty of what would come next. The weight of the unknown was heavy, and she struggled to find hope in a place that felt so unfamiliar.

Despite holding a bachelor’s degree from Artsakh University, Tatev felt paralyzed by the stress and fear of starting over. The thought of pursuing a career in a new city felt out of reach. The trauma of displacement, compounded by the responsibility of supporting her family, left her feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

A New Perspective on Possibility

Tatev’s journey began to shift when she connected with the Armenian Red Cross Society (ARCS) and was assigned a case manager through the European Union (EU)-funded RENEW program. Through patient, empathetic conversations, the case manager listened to Tatev’s story, her fears, and her quiet dreams for the future.

Instead of focusing on what had been lost, the case manager helped Tatev to look forward to what was still possible. Together, they began exploring Tatev’s strengths, skills, and interests. The case manager helped Tatev realize that despite the challenges, she was more than capable of rebuilding her life.

Building Confidence Through Training and Support

With the case manager’s guidance, Tatev referred to professional training opportunities that helped her regain confidence in her skills.

They worked together to create a professional CV that showed Tatev’s qualifications, her determination, and the strength she had shown through the adversity of displacement. Soon after, Tatev was offered a position as an administrator at a local beauty salon — a job that was not only well-suited to her skills but also gave her a sense of purpose and pride.

A Sense of Purpose and Family Stability

Securing the job was a huge milestone for Tatev. But her journey didn’t stop there. Recognizing the challenges of balancing work and family, her case manager helped arrange a kindergarten placement for her youngest child. This support allowed Tatev to fully commit to her job without the constant worry of childcare.

The new job and the stability it brought gave Tatev more than just financial security. It gave her a renewed sense of confidence and pride in her ability to provide for her family. It also set an inspiring example for her husband, who, motivated by Tatev’s determination, began to re-engage and pursue his own opportunities.

Steady Progress and a Brighter Future

Tatev’s transformation has been remarkable. What began as a journey of uncertainty and fear has now become a story of steady progress and empowerment.

She regained her confidence through training and professional guidance.

She found a job that gave her both financial independence and a renewed sense of purpose.

With the help of the case manager, her youngest child was enrolled in kindergarten, allowing Tatev to balance work and family life.

Tatev’s resilience has not only helped her recover but has also inspired her family to take action toward a better future.

Today, Tatev walks her path with renewed confidence. Thanks to the steady support and practical assistance she received through the EU-funded RENEW program, Tatev has rediscovered her strength — and with it, the power to rebuild her life.

Small Victories, Lasting Impact

Tatev’s journey is a reminder that resilience isn’t just about surviving; it’s about reclaiming one’s strength, rebuilding, and finding hope amid adversity. The RENEW program’s tailored support has been a key factor in Tatev’s success, empowering her to rise above her circumstances and transform her life step by step.

The RENEW project, implemented with the support of European Union Humanitarian Aid, aims to improve the living conditions and psychosocial well-being of 16,020 women, men, girls, and boys displaced by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which escalated in 2023 and led to a massive influx of over 100,000 individuals seeking refuge in Armenia. Implemented in the regions of Ararat, Armavir, and Kotayk, the project focuses on supporting displaced people in rebuilding their lives and fostering stability and resilience within their new communities.
