The main purpose of department activities is to reduce the population’s vulnerability towards natural and man-maid disasters throw reducing disaster risk on community level and strengthening the ARCS system of disaster preparedness and response (DPR).
Programmes/projects 2009
ARCS Disaster Management direction has launched “Disaster Risk Reduction” project with support of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) and financial assistance of Norwegian Red Cross since September, 2009 that will last till December of the same year. Beneficiaries of the project are 10 risking communities of RA Tavush region, in each of 10 communities of the region vulnerability and capacity detailed assessment (VCA) has been recently implemented to define local risks, hazards, vulnerabilities and capacities typical to the communities.
At the end of the project a VCA report will be developed per each community based on the results of the assessment implemented in each of 10 communities which will include a plan of action on disaster preparedness and prevention as well.
In the frameworks of the project a basic training course on disaster risk management are organized for heads of the communities, population and other local organizations representatives in each 10 of target communities.
A number of seminars on “Earthquake”, “Flood”, “Mudflow” and “Landslide” themes are organized in the 10 above mentioned communities with participation of 100 pupils in each community aimed at raising of children’s awareness on disasters. Simulation evacuations are also organized in the same schools.
“Children Quiz” contest took place in 23-24 December 2009 with participation of 10 teams chosen from schools of the 10 communities. 300 pupils were involved.
Informational posters and booklets were printed and are distributed to the population aimed at public awareness raising on disasters.
